Conference Travel Funds for Graduate Students (Winter 2009) (for UCLA Graduate Student)
Application Period: 11/1/2009 - 12/3/2009
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: DECEMBER 1 for conferences between January 2010 and April 2010

UCLA graduate students with a European or Eurasian focus may apply to CEES for travel funds if departmental sources have already been exhausted. Students are eligible to receive up to $1,000 in travel funds over the course of two academic years. To apply for travel funds students must provide a documented airfare estimate from an airline, travel website, or UCLA travel, an abstract of the paper, a conference program or other proof that the conference paper has been accepted (maximum 5 pages), and a short electronic letter from the student's advisor indicating his or her endorsement of the student's participation in the conference. CEES travel funds may only be used to cover the cost of airfare. They do not cover hotel, conference registration fees, or ground transportation. Proof of payment for the ticket must be submitted at the completion of the trip in order for the reimbursement to be processed.

CEES FLAS, AY 2010 -2011 (for UCLA Graduate Student, UCLA Undergraduate Student)

The U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowship program supports graduate training in modern foreign languages and related area studies for students working. Academic-year awards provide a $15,000 stipend as well as registration fees and tuition. Summer awards provide a stipend up to $2,500 plus tuition and fees to a maximum of $4,000, and up to $1000 for travel. New and continuing graduate students in all disciplines may apply for academic year and summer awards.

The fellowship requires that students take language and area studies courses for a letter grade during the academic year if in residence at UCLA. Currently approved languages for academic year study include, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Czech, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian/Croatian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Ukrainian. To apply for a FLAS fellowship, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Since the purpose of the program is to enrich the nation’s pool of area and international specialists, applicants must be planning to use their training to teach, to serve in government or international agencies or to engage in other work that advances American understanding of other countries. Fellowship recipients must be engaged in full-time study for the duration of their awards and must submit reports on the courses they pursue and the progress they make. Awards may be used for dissertation research, but this must be approved in advance.

* 1 language evaluation or proficiency certification

CEES FLAS, Summer 2010 (for UCLA Graduate Student, UCLA Undergraduate Student)

The U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowship program supports graduate training in modern foreign languages and related area studies. Currently approved languages for summer study include (but are not limited to): Armenian, Azerbaijani, Czech, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian/Croatian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Ukrainian. As of Summer 2010, undergraduate students studying the target language at the advanced level (3rd year or above) are eligible for FLAS awards.

FLAS funds may be used for intensive summer language study at UCLA or elsewhere. Non-language summer programs are not eligible for FLAS funding. Award amounts include up to $4,000 for tuition and fees, $2,500 for living expenses, and $1,000 for travel expenses. In order to qualify for funding, the intensive language program must last at least 6 weeks, provide the equivalent of a full academic year of instruction, and provide at least 140 contact hours for beginning and intermediate level, or 120 contact hours for advanced level coursework.
